THE PORSCHE 993 IS NOW IN A BUBBLE PHASE
Looking for a Porsche 993? The last of the air-cooled engines? Well you better start pulling the trigger cause the Porsche 993 prices has now officially jumped thru the roof and is in bubble territory. Need proof? Take a look at these recent cars for sale:
Get the picture? These cars are expensive. Heck I remember not even 2 years ago, I saw tons of low mileage Porsche 993′s located near me being sold in the mid to upper 20 thousands. Now like bitcoin currency, the price on the Porsche 993 when dramatically going up. Why?
Good question. If you don’t know, the Porsche 993 is considered the apex of the air-cooled rear engine Porsche 911. After the 993 came the water-cooled 911′s, which all modern Porsche’s are configured as. Owners and fans say that a true 911 is one with an air-cooled engine because it has a raw, visceral, organic feel that no modern Porsche 911 will ever provide. So we know there is a base of fans for the air-cooled 911s. So what makes the 993 so special?
AN EVOLUTION OF THE PERFECT PORSCHE
Porsche hit a home run with the Porsche 993. First the engine is correct and it pumps out close to 280 hp in standard Carrera form. But the body hit the right spots, with beautiful wings in the front fenders and wide, curvy hips for the back. So you can say the Porsche 993 got the form and functionality right. But why are prices going up?
There many different rumors on what is driving the market. The ones I hear a lot are:
- Europe. As the 993′s get rarer and rarer, the European market looks towards the USA to buy cars and ship them back over the Atlantic.
- Collectors. As its been a good 20 years since the first 993 came to the USA, Collectors are buying these cars not to drive but to collect and store. So cars that would change hands from one driving enthusiast to another are now going into collections instead.
- Greed. Basically people are riding a wave. There is a perception that the Porsche 993 is worth more and owners who would sold it modestly 1 or 2 years ago are now asking for the Moon. And some are getting it.
So where is this all heading? Well its either going to be permanent, which means its going to suck in the future if you want a Porsche 993 for a decent price. Or we are looking at the automotive version of the Dutch Tulip. Meaning its a bubble and eventually prices will go back down to where its realistic and, ahem, accessible to the normal car buyer like you and I.
